Serbia
One of the largest lowland fortresses in Europe, this UNESCO-listed Serbian medieval masterpiece is still revealing its buried secrets.
This massive fortress was built in the 15th century as a defense against the encroaching Turks. Made with the utmost haste, many workers died of exhaustion. The people blamed despotess Jerina for their fates, earning her the nickname “The Damned”. The fortress consists of two sections: the castle where the nobles lived, and the ‘Big Town’, where people took refuge from the Turks. The fortress is still an active archaeological site - in 2012, the tomb of an unknown noble woman adorned in priceless jewelry was discovered, along with the remains of a small church from an unknown year. For a small fee, visitors can roam the castle grounds, and walk the walls for great views of the Danube river.
