Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre

See the staggering work that went into Australia's largest engineering project: a hydroelectric complex with 16 dams and 7 power stations.

About

Not only did the Snowy Scheme provide an eventual 3.772 gigawatts of electricity to New South Wales, and supply much needed irrigation to the surrounding farmlands, it also opened up the whole area to mass tourism. The various scheme sites are often visited as a day out, trout fishing on one of the lakes is popular, and the ski resorts (here since the 1860’s) received a massive boost. Instead of traveling round the sites you can instead visit the highly informative Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. There’s a state-of-the-art theatre with archive and interpretive footage, an extensive photographic, model, exhibit, and interactive displays collection taking you through the history of the scheme. There’s a special challenge here too - power bikes; can you peddle fast enough to make toast? You might be surprised to learn that their cafe is so well renowned that locals often come here just for the coffee.
