Colombia
Small but influential, this picturesque city was the instigator of the first major revolt against the Spanish rule.
This town may be lesser known today, but make no mistake, Socorro was one of the most important towns in Colombia’s history. In 1781, a sharp increase in taxes lead to a rebellion against the Spanish rule. This rebellion, which was ignited from the civilians in Socorro, developed into a coup of 20,000 that marched to Bogota. The rebellion- known as the ‘comuneros,’ was the first time the Spanish were challenged in two centuries. Socorro’s history is not the only highlight of this small town. There is no other church in Colombia quite like Catedral Nuestra Senora del Socorro. Made of stone, marble, and stunning glass work, this impressive structure is the perfect landmark to begin your historic tour through Socorro.
