Solitaire

This desolate-seeming settlement in the middle of the desert is famous for its apple pie.

About

Solitaire was founded in 1948 when Willem Christoffel van Coller bought 33,000 hectares of land to start a sheep farm. Beginning with a 2-room cottage, he later constructed the main farm house, the current shop, and installed the first petrol pump. Today, the settlement is essentially only a gasoline station, bakery, cafe, general dealer, and a motel, with wrecked and abandoned cars adding to the feeling of desolation (and providing some great photo ops). However, step into the bakery for some apple pie or other baked goods, and you’ll feel like you’re back home - at least until you see the rain almanac.
