Soomaa National Park

Named a “supreme nature holiday destination” by the European Commission, this extensive and diverse wetland is a treasure trove of recreational activities and natural wonders.

About

Covering over 390 square kilometers of land, Soomaa National Park is a vast spectacle of nature and an icon of Estonia. It was created in 1993 to protect the high-elevation bogs, grasslands covering floodplains, forests transformed by water saturation, and rivers with winding courses. Rich meadows cover the riverbanks and are home to approximately 200 species of flora, with the eye-catching and mist-filled swamp forests that surround the site giving a mythological look to the landscape. For fans of bird-watching, Soomaa National Park has one of the most representative compositions of bird species in all of Estonia including the golden eagle and Eurasian whimbrel. Visit in autumn to see the show-stopping migration of around 2,000 Bewick’s swans flocking to the park. Head to the Sooma National Park Visitor Center for comprehensive guides to the nature and hiking trails and explore the park’s wetlands and waterways by canoeing. If you’re visiting in winter, walk over the stunning frozen wetlands and connect with the area’s nature and history.
