This temple finds its serene abode beneath the picturesque summit of Mount Hambaksan, and is the site where the renowned monk Wonhyo-daesa is believed to have offered prayers.
Sowonsa Temple translates to “wish temple”, reflecting the belief that your earnest wishes may be granted through prayers within its premises. The temple entrance welcomes you into a world of vibrant hues and rich Buddhist symbolism. An array of the twelve Zodiac Generals, meticulously sculpted stone statues, lines the entry path up to the Cheonwangmun Gate. Upon crossing the Cheonwangmun Gate, a white jade statue of Podae-hwasang, adorned with small white jade children, meets your gaze. The area features a tranquil koi pond and a small shrine dedicated to Yongwang (The Dragon King) along with a white Gwanseeum-bosal shrine. Proceeding to the temple's central courtyard, a pathway flanked by elevated stone statues embodies the concept of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," each depicting childlike Buddhas fostering the Buddhist principle of warding off negativity. Sowonsa Temple invites contemplation and a connection to spiritual traditions within its vibrant surroundings, where architectural splendor meets natural beauty.
