Bermuda
This one of a kind Anglican church offers visitors a glimpse into Bermuda’s past against an unforgettable oceanic backdrop.
A fascinating structure constructed in distinctive Bermuda limestone, St. James’ Church was rebuilt overtop of a wooden structure destroyed in a hurricane in the late 1700s. The current structure was completed in 1789, though some details such as the iron gates and the church’s spire were completed later in the latter part of the 19th century. Interestingly, the spire was designed by a local physician who happened to have a keen interest in architecture. The church is one of the most distinctive in Bermuda, as the reconstructions over time have captured centuries of changes and development in the blending of architectural features. Most unusual for Anglican churches in the area is that this church’s main entrance faced east, with the alter facing West overlooking the ocean. The site of the church offers breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in parts of the attached graveyard where paths lead toward the water.
