A small port town since the 8th century BC, it was overshadowed by the nearby Pompeii, and completely destroyed by Sulla in 89 BC. It’s strategic position overlooking the Bay of Naples, also proved scenic, and it reemerged as a Roman resort town, which flourished until the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today, visitors can explore 2 luxury villas, complete with baths and frescoes, that were buried under 2 meters of volcanic ash. The Villa San Marco is centered around an atrium lined with columns. The baths quarter and monumental swimming pool reflect the eccentric tastes of the ancient owner, with finely frescoed rooms and a unique upper garden surrounded by columns. The Villa Arianna likewise has several rooms with exquisite frescoes.
