Stone Town of Kuklica

According to a local legend, these “stone dolls” are petrified wedding guests from a tragic love story in which the entire wedding party was put under a curse. Geologists, however, attribute these natural rock formations to millions of years of erosion and weathering. Ancient volcanoes produced landscapes of varying types of stones with each eruption cycle. As the softer stone eroded away over thousands of years, the pillars made from the harder stones stayed in place. Today, over 120 stone pillars resemble a wedding party, with the main feature being the bride and groom stone dolls, forever side-by-side at the altar. Some pillars are as tall as 32 feet (10 meters) and legend says more pillars appear every couple of years. Kuklica is also located near Kratovo, a town built in the crater of an extinct volcano, as the name suggests. This entire region is full of unique geological formations to explore!
