This stone circle is a fully-functional observatory based on the techniques used by ancient civilizations.
Stonehenge Aotearoa was built by the Phoenix Astronomical Society to preserve the ancient astronomical techniques of Egypt, Babylon, and the Indus Valley, Polynesian navigation, and Celtic and Maori starlore. Built on the same scale as the famous English monument, Aotearoa is not a replica, but a fully functional astronomical tool designed for its exact location. Scattered around the site are other astronomical curiosities, like the hall of astrophotography, the base of an old telescope dome, and a few artistic additions. There’s plenty of signage around the site, but for an even better understanding, you can also book a guided tour. At 20:00 every Friday and Saturday, astronomers host Nighttime Telescope viewing. Both should be booked in advance at https://www.stonehenge-aotearoa.co.nz/
