Straubing

With the old town dating from early medieval times and the new town from 1218, Straubing is a high spot of German Bavaria.

About

There has been a settlement located at Straubing since Neolithic times and evidence of this long and varied history is apparent throughout the town. Roman artifacts and treasures can be viewed at the town's Gäubodenmuseum while St Peter's Church dates from the 12th century. Romanesque in design, it boasts two distinctive portals exquisitely sculptured. In 1218 part of the city known as 'new town' was constructed and nowadays this acts as the main shopping and dining out area in Straubing. The Town Hall and City Tower are equally stunning models of Gothic architecture, however perhaps the most iconic example is the Basilika St. Jakob. Particularly striking is the 16th century tower, with its sleek design and striking onion dome. The church also well known for its painted glass windows, showcased in four large panels dating from the 14th century.
