Take in amazing lake views from this UNESCO-listed point that was used to measure the size of the earth.
The Struve Geodetic Arc: Oravivuori Arc Point is a fascinating piece of scientific history in a stunning natural setting. Back in the 1800s, German-born astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve proposed to the Russian Czar that he could create more accurate maps by accurately measuring the meridian arc, and thus the exact size and shape of the planet. Using the relatively new method of triangulation, Struve built a 2820-kilometer-long chain of measurement points, stretching from Romania to Norway. For its important contributions to science, and its extraordinary display of international scientific collaboration, the Struve Geodetic Arc was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Oravivuori Arc Point is one of the 35 specifically mentioned in the UNESCO listing, offering this slice of history in an amazing natural surrounding. Follow the hiking trail to the top of the hill and the viewing tower for a panoramic view over Lake Päijänne and other Struve chain hills! Please note: parts of the trail can be quite demanding, and there is no service on the path in winter. Photo by Maaritti Siitonen under CC BY-SA 4.0
