This house of god high above a harbor town is a modernist take on a whale tale.
Built in 1990, Stykkisholmskirkja is the landmark building in the town of Stykkishólmur. Visible from both land and see thanks to its clifftop position, the modernist white building was designed to resemble a whale’s tale. The interior is characteristically stark, the only ornamentation coming in the form of a painting of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus above the altar, and the new Klais organ. The church holds regular musical events and recitals, especially in the summer. For more information, please visit www.stykkisholmskirkja.is
