Looking like a Victorian English manor, this mosque was the first step in Johor’s modernization.
Begun in 1892, the construction of the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque marked the beginning of Johor’s modernisation. Considered the "Father of Modern Johor", Sultan Abu Bakar was an anglophile who maintained a close relationship with Britain. For his mosque, Sultan Abu Bakar borrowed heavily from Victorian style, even modelling the minarets after British watchtowers. Non-Muslim visitors are not allowed to enter the interior of the mosque, and while it can be viewed from outside free of charge, you must be dressed conservatively. One can enjoy a beautiful view even from the outside, spanning across the Johor Strait to Singapore.
