Surdesti Wooden Church

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the tallest wooden structures in Europe, and an amazing example of rural religious architecture.

About

Built in 1766 entirely of wood, the local parish believed a taller church would make their prayers ascend to Heaven faster, so they erected this impressive 72 meter tall wooden church without using so much as a metal nail. The construction technique has proven so resilient that the church remained in active use until 2003, when the Săpânța-Peri monastery was completed. Today, visitors can marvel at this feat of traditional carpentry and immense faith. The facade, with its double eaves and two rows of windows is adorned with a recurring twisted rope motif, and several other carvings. The painted interior depicts scenes from the Old and the New Testament, including a pre-Copernican universe, where the sun revolve around the Earth.
