Szigliget Fortress

This mighty hilltop fortress was so unassailable that it was never taken by the Turks during their 150 year occupation.

About

Szigliget Fortress was first built in the 13th century by the Benedictine order to protect the region from the invading Tartars. Over the centuries, the original keep was expanded to better guard against the many threats it faced. Despite Hungary’s 150-year Turkish occupation, the Ottoman flag was never flown at Szigliget. In the 17th century, the castle was all but abandoned and left to fall into ruin after being set ablaze by a lighting strike. Today, the fortress has been preserved in its ruined state, allowing visitors to explore the the sprawling grounds and restored areas where signs and exhibits shed some light on the castle’s history, and life in centuries past. And of course, as a hilltop castle, you’re treated to panoramic views of the Balaton region. For more information, please visit szigligeti-var.hu
