Finland
Soak up Finland's UNESCO-listed sauna tradition in this hot-house heavy city.
Located on a strip of land between two lakes, Tampere is a walkable, relaxed city with scenic views and old, industrial red-brick buildings in the city center which have been converted into restaurants, cafes, museums and shops. But it's not the history that's made Tampere the top destination amongst Finns. No, they flock here for the saunas! The sauna is so important to Finnish culture that it's inscribed on the the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, and Tampere has over 50 public saunas to choose from! Try Rajaportti, Finland’s oldest public sauna, Rauhaniemi or Suomensaaren. If you’re looking for a unique sauna, Saunaravintola Kuuma is a good choice because it also has a restaurant. But prepare yourself: swimsuits are banned in the hot rooms. If you’re visiting with kids, Tampere has a great amusement park, Särkänniemi. Finally, of course, let’s not forget about food! After sweating it out in the sauna, head to Tampere Market Hall or Laukontori Market Square for some black sausage with lingonberry jam.
