Varda Viaduct

This dramatic span is recognized around the world for its appearance in the James Bond film Skyfall.

About

The Varda Viaduct was built in 1888 as part of an agreement between the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamit II and German Emperor Kaiser Willhelm. The bridge was financed by Deutsche Bank, erected by the German construction company Philipp Holzmann & Cie, and designed and engineered by the German Winkler and Greek-Ottoman Nicholas Mavrogordato. Because of the heavy German involvement, it’s often called the ‘German Bridge’ by locals. Spanning a rocky ravine, this dramatic bridge has become a tourist destination thanks to its appearance in the James Bond film Skyfall.
