Tatacoa Desert

Millions of years ago, the Tatacoa Desert was a lush tropical forest, but geological changes have caused the landscape to dry up. Stretching for 330 square kilometers, the area is renowned for its fossil deposits, and for being broken into two distinct regions. The grey Los Hoyos area looks like a lunar landscape, while the red Cuzco region is filled with dramatic formations topped by desert plants clinging to life. While many travellers opt to spend a few days exploring the alien landscape, a few hostels offer visitors the chance to soak in the landscape without having to brave the scorching heat. They’ve even made a pool, fed by spring water, where you can soak the day away. If you’re passing by after dark, you can treat yourself to some downright stellar views - the desert is home to some of the best stargazing in South America, and the observatory is open to visitors.
