From exotic birds to delicate orchids and the world’s tallest tropical trees, this park offers an easily accessible taste of the rainforest.
The Tawau Hills Park offers visitors and local alike a variety of hiking trails through primary rainforest. The most accessible is the 2 hectare botanical garden, which gives a taste of the forest’s biodiversity, while the, the 30 minute walk to Bombalai Hill culminates in great views and a glimpse at what was formerly the world's tallest tropical tree - newly discovered 94 meter tree within the park now has that honor, and is getting its own hiking trail. For a slightly longer hike, try the 2.5km trail to the picturesque Bukit Gelas Falls, or the 3.2km track to a sulphur hot-spring locals believe has medicinal properties. An oasis amongst palm oil and cocoa plantations, the park is home to everything from delicate orchids to monkeys, and a variety of birds. It’s strongly advised to have appropriate clothing and footwear.
