Mexico
This charming colonial town is famed for both its intricate architecture and skilled silversmiths.
Founded by the Spanish in 1529 not far from an important Aztec settlement, Taxco grew rich during the colonial era for the abundance of silver in the surrounding hills. While much of the city's economy has since shifted from mining, it is still famous for its skilled silversmiths. Walking up the sloping cobblestone streets, you'll pass colorful colonial buildings that are still in use as family homes, shops, or restaurants. But no matter where you are, you'll be in sight of the Templo de Santa Prisca Guerrero standing proudly on the central hilltop. A masterful example of Baroque architecture, the church's opulent decor stands as a reminder of the town's former wealth. The nearby Museum of Religious Art is also worth checking out for both its ornate architecture and interesting collection.
