El Salvador
Though relatively small, El Salvador’s largest and most important Mayan ruins were once a major Mayan trade center.
Tazumal is believed to have been settled around 100 AD, after which it grew into an important trade center with ties to the greatest Mayan cities, like Chichen Itza. Around the 13th century, the city was abandoned in favor of Chalchuapa. Most of the buildings here date from the 5th to 8th century, with tombs, workshops, pyramids, and even irrigation systems and a ball court being uncovered. There are also some interesting carvings, such as a large statue of a Mexican Olmec dignitary. Nearby, the Stanley Boggs museum exhibits Mayan artefacts including pottery, jewelry, and tools unearthed by the man who excavated and restored the site.
