Te Waikoropupu Springs

Revered by the local Moari tribe, this spring pumps out some of the world’s clearest fresh water.

About

Being of high spiritual significance to the Maori people as a place of healing, it is forbidden to swim, drink or even touch the water at Te Waikoropupu Springs. However, this will not spoil your experience here, as the sight will be enough for you to be satisfied. These water vents create the largest cold water springs south of the Equator, with water so clear that it approaches the theoretical maximum of visual clarity! With a deep turquoise color, you can see directly to the floor of the lake with all of the plant life completely visible. The estimated 14,000 liters of water produced per second is enough to supply a city the size of Boston, Massachusetts.
