Watch as trains loop around themselves going up this innovative bit of 19th century engineering.
The Tehachapi Loop Overlook showcases one of the more unique engineering feats of the Southern Pacific Railway. Needing a way to clear the Tehachapi Pass, in 1874 engineers created a giant helix up the hill - right after trains emerging from a tunnel through the mountains. Now, some 40 trains use the Tehachapi Loop per day, much to the delight of train lovers. Long trains are especially fun to see - any over 4,000 feet will pass over themselves as they go around the loop.
