Home to hundred of species of bird and scenic walking trails, this nature reserve is a haven for bird-watchers and nature-lovers alike.
Opened in 1972, this massive natural reserve has shifted focus several times, but its primary concern has always been the protection of the reserve’s unique natural environments and the creatures that live there. The reserve got its start at the 1960s when a group of local ornithologists realized that though the Bassin d’Arcachon was a very attractive environment for birds, it didn’t offer them a protected habitat along its shoreline. Fortunately, they managed to convince the local municipality of the necessity for a reserve. Covering 110 hectares of marsh, lakes and waterways, scenic paths give nature lovers a scenic place to walk. For birdwatchers, 323 species have been spotted in the park thanks to its favourable environment and position on a migration route. The park even has permanent bird hides in some choice areas to help photographers get that perfect shot.
