New Zealand
Surrounded by soaring peaks, fields of wildflowers, and dense mountain forest, this vibrant lake is a delight for nature lovers.
The town of Lake Tekapo sits at the very Southern tip of the lake with the same name, but the lake itself is what visitors are really after. The stunning, solid turquoise color of Lake Tekapo is derived from fine rock-flour, giving it an almost milky quality. Go for a dip, or perhaps rent a kayak to experience the view from the center of it all. For those not keen to dip their toes during their stop, there are bike paths, golf courses, and an observatory to entertain. The Earth and Sky observatory is open during the day as an AstroCafe to refresh tourists passing through, but if you want to visit after dark, be sure to make a booking in advance, and see why this entire area is declared a reserve by the International Dark Sky Association.
