Morocco
Left to crumble after its owner betrayed the sultan, there are still some bastions of luxury left in this 19th century kasbah.
Telouet Kasbah was built by the El Glaoui family in 1860. With close ties to the Sultan, the El Glaouis ruled as Pashas, the equivalent of dukes, and enjoyed immense wealth and power. Between 1912 and 1956, Thami El Glaoui ruled as the Pasha of Marrakech, and was known for throwing lavish parties at the Telouet Kasbah. Thami used his political clout to help the French oust Sultan Mohammed V, but in 1955 when the sultan returned from exile, El Glaoui was declared a traitor and stripped of his status. Kasbah Telouet has since declined from its original opulence, but beneath the deceptively decrepit exterior, you’ll still find some beautiful Moorish architecture, complete with ornate windows and painted ceilings.
