Laos
One of the holiest sites in Laos, it’s said this centuries-old stupa holds one of Buddha’s bones.
That Ing Hang was built in the mid-16th century by King Marukhanakhone to commemorate Buddha having visited the site centuries earlier. According to tradition, Buddha stopped here during his travels and rested by leaning (Ing) beneath a Hang tree, hence the temple’s name. Sitting atop a Mon-style base, the 9-meter-tall stupa is covered in intricate carvings and sculptures. Considered the second-holiest religious structure in southern Laos, the stupa is registered as a National Treasure, and revered by both Laotian and Northern Thai Buddhists. Please note: women are required to wear a traditional skirt (available next to the entrance) in order to enter the site.
