On the slopes of Mount Piltriquitrón, high above the enchanting city of El Bolsón, this forest beckons visitors into a realm of artistic splendor.
The Carved Forest, also known as Bosque Tallado, is an open-air museum conceived by Argentinian artist Marcelo Lopez in 1998. A testament to nature's resilience, the forest thrives on fallen, dry, and burned trees, crafting a surreal landscape. Over 60 exquisite wooden sculptures breathe new life into the once-charred trunks, transforming them into captivating artworks. The initiative began with a group of artists carving out the first 13 sculptures in just over a week. Since then, talents from around the world have converged to contribute, making the Carved Forest a global collaboration. The forest, set against the dramatic backdrop of the pre-cordillera mountains, offers a unique blend of art and nature. Each sculpture, created with chainsaws and other carving tools, tells a story, with some representing guardian spirits protecting the region's future. Visitors embark on a roughly one-hour walk, ascending to the site at 1500 meters above sea level. The panoramic views of the New Valley, snow-capped peaks, and the deep hues of Lake Puelo add to the magical experience
