Greece
Thanks to its perfect proportions and incomparable acoustics, this is quite simply the best classical Greek theatre.
The Great Theatre of Epidaurus was built around 320 BC by the architect Polykleitos the Younger. Around the 2nd century AD, it was further expanded. It’s estimated 15,000 spectators could fit on the 55 rows of seats set into a natural slope. Despite being completely buried for centuries, the theatre of Epidaurus remains the finest and best-preserved example of a classical Greek theatre. Along with its amazing symmetry, the theatre sets itself apart from the rest thanks to its unparalleled acoustics. Thanks to some ingenious acoustic engineering, even audience members at the back row 60 meters away are able to hear the quietest sounds from the stage. In fact, the theatre is so good that it hosts the Festival of Epidaurus every summer.
