Overlooking the Adriatic, these medieval churches are steeped in local legend, and offer great views.
According to legend, the first church was built in the 1220s by Stefan Nemanjić, the first king of Serbia, while the second was built by King Stephen Uroš IV Dušan in 1351. The monastery was deserted after being plundered and razed by the pirates of Ulcinj in the mid 15th century. It was plundered again in 1785 by Mahmud Pasha Bushatli. For several centuries a vessel of wine was kept on a column in front of a guesthouse for thirsty passersby. One legend says that Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse drank from it during the First Crusade, and another says the first king of Serbia, drank wine from this wine vessel, after which he allegedly built 'The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God'. Stepping through the threshold, visitors are rewarded with a vibrantly painted interior.
