Legend says that the California Gold Rush began with a man taking a nap in the shadow of this gnarled tree.
It might be called the Oak of the Golden Dream now, but back in 1842, it was just some tree that a tired mineralogist decided to take a nap under. While he slumbered, Francisco Lopez had visions of floating down a river of gold. Feeling hungry after his snooze, he dug up some wild onions to eat, and discovered flecks of gold clinging to the roots. While the story of the vision might just be fantasy, the gold Lopez brought to Los Angeles was very real, and the first instance of gold being discovered in California. Once the news got out prospectors had a dream of their own, and the famous California Gold Rush took off.
