Rwanda
This significant landmark in the Bugesera district of Rwanda towers powerfully over the surrounding terrain and holds spine-chilling stories of gruesome fates.
Believed to be around 150 million years old, the Rock of Kamegeri rises more than 200 meters above the terrain of the Ruhonga. It is a sacred site of cultural importance for the people of Rwanda, and the local legend goes that it was formed by the god of thunder and lightning. A tale of the 19th century endows the rock with a violent character, whereby an advisor of the King of Rwanda named Kamegeri suggested that the rock be heated with fire wood until red hot and used as a punishment place for lawless citizens. In a shocking twist of fate, the King then put Kamegeri to death on the rock for suggesting such an inhumane act. People say the rock remains hot no matter the weather conditions, like an eerie reminder of the past.
