The history of aviation, and Britain’s brave airmen, is preserved though over 100 warplanes, many of which can’t be seen anywhere else.
Opened in 1972, the Royal Air Force Museum London began with 36 aircraft housed in a World War I aerodrome. Over the years, the museum accrued more planes, and more space, and now has over 100 warplanes from the past 100 years housed in 5 hangers. Here visitors will discovered the evolution of aircraft and the RAF, from the Sopwith Camel to the Eurofighter Typhoon, and see rare relics, such as one of the 2 surviving Vickers Wellingtons, and iconic RAF planes like a Spitfire that flew in the Battle of Britain. Along with the aircraft are exhibitions about the vital work of the ground crews, and personal artefacts ranging from RAF airmen. All this history is brought to life through fascinating audiovisual installations, and visitors can even get into a simulator to take to the (virtual) skies!
