Iceland
Housed in two historic buildings, this fascinating double exhibition tells the tale of the discovery of Iceland, and the Saga of its most famous Viking.
The Settlement Center is housed in a 19th century warehouse and the adjoining Merchant’s House (the oldest building in town). Here, visitors gain fascinating insight into the history and culture of this island nation though multimedia exhibitions containing everything from storyboards and sculptures to live performances. One exhibition is dedicated to the Vikings who first discovered and settled Iceland, telling the tale of why they left their home of Norway, and how they braved the open sea. Once they landed, they establishment the world’s first parliament in the world at Thingvellir in 930AD. Then there’s the exhibition dedicated to Egil´s Saga - an epic dedicated to the country’s beloved warrior poet. Egil’s Saga blends battles and love affairs, sorcery and pagan lore, all of which gives a fascinating insight into the country’s tumultuous early years. Also onsite is a cafe and restaurant, where you can sit and digest your new knowledge. For more information please visit www.landnam.is/eng
