The Stone Mushrooms

Created by centuries of natural erosion, these unusual rock formations have a somber legend to tell.

About

Shaped by waters of a lake that is now long gone, the stone mushrooms of Beli Plast have been declared a natural landmark in 1974. Reaching 2.5 meters in height, these pink-green limestone formation offer a truly whimsical sight. Scattered across the field, these rocks remarkably resemble wild mushrooms in a forest. A local folktale tells a story of four sisters that got captured in a siege of a nearby town. Killing their incarcerators, the girls managed to escape. However, soon enough, an enraged guard caught up with them and with one blow cut off the head of the closest sister. Upon touching the ground, she turned into a beautiful stone mushroom. Other sisters met the same fate. Frightened by the curse, the guard tried to flee but was turned into a black rock that can still be seen on the edge of the field.
