The Three Eyes

These vibrant subterranean pools bring a slice of primordial natural beauty to Santo Domingo Este.

About

Los Tres Ojos are a series of subterranean lakes that formed when prehistoric caves collapsed and filled with water from an underground river. Basically, the Dominican Republic’s version of Mexico’s famous cenotes. Descending a winding staircase brings you to the pools at the base of the open caverns, where the waters shift in shades of green and blue from the flowing underground river. Along with their natural beauty, the Eyes hold cultural significance, having been used by the indigenous Taino Indians for religious rituals. As you move through the Eyes, keep your eyes open for petroglyphs and pottery shards. And while the park is called the “Three Eyes”, there is actually a fourth pool, “Los Zaramagullones”. Reached by pulling a wooden barge across the second pool, this open-air lagoon, surrounded by lush vegetation is arguably the most idyllic, and has been featured in movies like Tarzan and Jurassic Park III. Please note: tickets aren’t included, and the last entry is at 3:00 PM.
