Housing impressive Buddhist art and a uniquely designed Buddha statue, this cultural and historical site is one of the largest brick buildings in Polonnaruwa.
The Thivanka Image House was built by King Parakramabahu (1153-1186) and is one of the largest brick buildings in Polonnaruwa, standing 133-feet (41 meters) tall and 67.6-feet (21 meters) wide. Its name ‘Thivanka’ translates to three curves, referencing the uniquely sculpted Buddha statue you can find here, which is curved in three places. Be sure to check out the beautifully intricate murals on the outside walls. At the entrance to the inside of the Image House, you will be met by two guard stones and two ‘korawak gala’ (stone balustrades located at the entrances of religious structures) which are a sight to behold! Walk inside the building and you will find the inside walls decorated with detailed and colorful artwork of legends and stories of divine beings, including the Jakata tales which depict the birth of Buddha before enlightenment. While some of the artwork has been damaged over time, you are sure to be inspired and captivated by the extensive collection of ancient Buddhist imagery here. Entrance tickets are not included in our price and must be purchased separately at the site.
