Bulgaria
This ancient mausoleum bridges the gap between ancient Thracian and Roman cultures.
Built sometime between the 1st and 2nd centuries, which is shortly after Thrace was conquered by the Romans, this noble mausoleum is the largest of its kind in Bulgaria, and an architectural oddity. As no graves have ever been found, it’s believed that it might have served as a funerary temple rather than tomb - perhaps to carry out traditional Thracian rituals in private. The interior is a brick dome, supported by a central pillar, which is actually a spiral staircase leading to the top of the mound.
