Nature is constantly changing the amazing sea stacks it formed on this scenic stretch of rocky coast.
Sticking out of the rocky North Taranaki coast, the Three Sisters and the Elephant Rock are some of the most spectacular and iconic natural formations in the region. These sea stacks, with their visible bands, were formed by the tide over thousands of years. Extending into the sea from the black sand beach, the Three Sisters are slender pillars that suffered a loss to the natural forces that formed them, but a new sister has since been been born from the coastal cliffs. Beyond these is the famed Elephant Rock, which once had two tunnels through it, but an earthquake in 2016 has since deprived it of its “trunk”.
