New Zealand
The best cascade to see along the Haast Pass, and the laziest!
Arguably the most accessible large waterfall in New Zealand, the 96-metre-tall Thunder Creek Falls are just a 5 minutes return walk from the highway. Unlike many wondrous nature sites in the country there are no long, uphill hikes to contend with, and the disproportionate reward for such a short stroll is one of the largest falls in the region, crashing down from a heavily forested hill to a small pool at the bottom. Though there’s no access to the fall itself the viewing platform has a perfect view across the swift-flowing blue-green Haast River. In summer remember to bring insect repellent to avoid being eaten by sandflies.
