Corrugated iron is a classic Kiwi building material, but it’s elevated to an art in this little town.
Tirau is known as the ‘Corrugated Capital of the World’ not because it produces so much of the material, but for its ingenious use of it. The town’s wool and craft shop is housed in a giant sheep constructed from corrugated iron, and was recently joined by a ram-shaped building in the same material. It was also used to build the “Big Dog” information center next door. Scattered around town, you’ll also find sculptures of a cow with a shopping cart, a shepherd outside the church, and a praying mantis crafted from this humble material. If you need a break from sculpture hunting, Tirau has a number of charming cafés, as well as boutique gift shops and galleries to peruse.
