Tiwanaku

A UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site, this ruined ancient city houses the remains of an advanced pre-Incan civilization.

About

Considered the most important archaeological site in the country, Tiwanaku is also one of the largest, covering an area of four square kilometers. While the site's exact age is argued, one thing for certain is - it was the political and spiritual capital of the Tiwanaku Empire. Its significance is in no small part due to the cultur's impressive technology, which revolutionised the agricultural industry, perfected the carving of stone for architectural purposes, and allowed the people of Tiwanaku to thrive in pottery, ceramics, and textiles. The Pumapunku temple contains the largest stone block in all of Tiwanaku, weighing more than 130 metric tons. It houses the Gateway of the Sun, a megalithic archway, a supposed agricultural calendar. The site contains two museums showing collections of ancient pottery and ceramics and other artifacts, monoliths engraved with intricate artwork and even a mummy!
