Sweden’s finest Arts & Crafts estate was featured in the film Melancholia.
Tjoloholm Castle was built at the end of the 19th century by James Fredrik Dickson, a shipping heir. The architect Lars Israel Wahlman applied a liberal helping of Arts & Crafts ethics to create an innovative take on 15th century Tudor architecture. The elegant, stone architecture served as a backdrop for the award-winning film Melancholia. Comprised of some 30 buildings, the estate grounds transform from a formal garden around the castle to natural English style parkland where walking trails lead through oak forests and coastal landscapes. Every day during the summer, and on weekends the rest of the year, guided tours (in Swedish) showcase the castle’s elegant rooms, and its technical innovations, such as one of the first vacuum cleaners, and state-of-the-art surround showers. The castle also has hotel rooms, and a restaurant and cafe.
