The heated waters of the Tokaanu Thermal Pools have been used by the local Māori tribe since the settled alongside the Tokaanu Stream in the 16th century. To this day, they still use the hot water and steam vents for cooking, dyeing traditional clothing, and of course, bathing. and their therapeutic qualities. The continuous supply of hot water and steam vents are used for their communal cooking, and dyeing of traditional clothing. A short walk along a boardwalk showcases these natural pools of steaming water and boiling mud. If you’re in need of some rejuvenation yourself, the thermal water is piped into smaller private pools ($12), and a large, public pool ($8). Please note: visiting is free, but bathing requires a ticket.
