This fantastical looking mountain is actually a rare geological phenomenon.
Unlike your usual mountain, Tokatoka Peak is the hardened lava of an ancient volcano that has long since eroded away. As the only elevated position in the area, hiking to the top of the peak offers amazing panoramic views. It’s only about a 20 minute climb, but at an ever-increasing gradient, it gets demanding. The path can also be extremely slippery after it rains. And be sure to clean your boots before your hike - Kauri dieback disease is spread through soil.
