With its rocky limestone shore dotted with ancient fortifications, Toulon boasts a unique character. The old town, much of which has seen extensive restoration works throughout the years, is one of the city’s most interesting areas with its narrow streets, local shops, and numerous public squares. The city is also home to the 18th century Church of Saint Louis, with a classical style facade, three naves, and double Doric columns; the 11th-century Cathedral of Saint Marie, enlarged in the 17th century; and the vast Military Port of Toulon dating back to the time of Henry IV and inaugurated in 1680. As an important centre for naval construction, fishing, wine making, and the manufacture of a wide range of items from aeronautical equipment to paper and tobacco, Toulon is sure to have something for everyone.
