Lithuania
This picturesque red brick castle was the historical capital of Lithuania, having hosted foreign dignitaries from all over Europe.
Grand Duke Kęstutis ordered the construction of an island castle towards the end of the 14th century, but was assassinated before it was completed. Once the station of Grand Duke of Lithuania was filled, the castle underwent years of further fortification, becoming one of the most impregnable fortresses in Eastern Europe by the 15th century. Following the defeat of the Teutonic Knights at the Battle of Grunwald, the castle lost its military importance and became a noble residence, housing the Duke, the Lithuanian Metrics, and every foreign dignitary that came to visit. The castle was severely damaged in the 17th century, and left in a state of disrepair until the mid-20th century. Today, the castle is not only one of the most beautiful in the country, but also houses an impressive exhibition, showcasing everything from furnished rooms to weaponry and period dress.
