Trencin Castle

This medieval, mountaintop bastion once guarded the region’s gateway to the Mediterranean.

About

Built in the 11th century to guard the Mediterranean merchant routes, the castle’s origins are actually much older, and can be traced back to the ancient Romans. A stone below the castle still carries a Roman inscription, and the rotunda is from the 9th century ‘Great Moravian’ period. While the castle was heavily restored, visitors can still delight in its many surviving medieval elements. Legend has it that the castle’s well was dug by a Turkish prince to free his captive lover. No escort is required to roam the ramparts, towers, and gardens, but to enter the furnished rooms of the castle proper, visitors will need to take the 75 minute guided tour. Tours are in Slovak, but it is possible to arrange an English tour by contacting the castle beforehand at http://www.muzeumtn.sk/en/contact.html?page_id=246
