It was around 49 000 BC that the first permanent settlement was established where the modern city of Trikala lies, while the ancient city of Trikke, which was mentioned in Homer's Iliad, was founded in 3rd millennium BCE. This rich heritage is easy to see even today, thanks to various ruins in the city. In the 17th century Varoussi neighborhood, visitors will find picturesque narrow alleys and multi-colored houses, as well as several churches, while the Koursoum Mosque from the 16th century is a reminder of the Ottoman rule.
